Welcome to Johan Rensenbrink's Blog!

Welcome to my blog. What is it? I'll be posting the occasional life stories here if anyone's interested. See what I've been up to for yourself and if you want post a comment or chat in the forums. Don't expect anything particularly interesting here but hey, where else do I put all this stuff, eh?

I’ve installed and integrated a plugin on my site that will allow users to login simply on any part of my site, and remain logged in on the rest of the site. Unfortunately in my case there aren’t really any other content management systems installed on my site, although it can’t help to be future proof right?

PCSX2 – CPU emulates better than Graphics Card

View Comments

It’s quite a strange moment when you realize the CPU emulates better in DirectX11 Software mode than in DirectX10 hardware mode with the graphics card. It seems unlikely to happen, but maybe it’s only occurring in PS2 games. You’d have to use the program to understand what I’m talking about but ah well, what else is there to post? The game in question was Gran Turismo 4, since I can’t exactly play PS2 games on my PS3. I might soon though, with a bit of luck.

Platinum!

View Comments

Yay! Finally got my first platinum trophy. Took me an awful while, but hey, it keeps me wanting to play a game. Almost got my second one as well, since I was already nearly done with another game. I don’t really get anything for these trophies but it feels like a proper achievement.

On an unrelated note, just had this a few seconds ago:

Oops..

View Comments

I’ve been notified lately that I had somehow managed to create over 2 million files on my hosting account. Unfortunately I had left on a caching feature from my proxy. This created a nice little 30GB of 2 million files, and it took a good 2 hours to remove. For anyone who isn’t aware, the caching feature will allow users to browse the proxy faster as it has already loaded certain files instead of having to download them again. Existing users shouldn’t really notice any change as I am on a very high speed plan anyway. I saved myself from account deletion and have managed to get the files down to some other number that I’m unaware of, but probably under 10.000 at least.

Yeah, oops.

Here’s a small compiled list of the most popular sites visitted through the proxy. This month actually has Myspace as the most-visited site, but as it’s fairly early in the month I’m showing last month’s results.

There were quite a lot of other sites with thousands of views, consisting mainly of flash games and socialising sites.

Killzone 2

View Comments

Killzone 2 is one of the latest most-wanted games on the PS3, and it seems to have really improved from its predecessor, Killzone. Killzone 2 has astonishing graphis, amazing gameplay, great sound, great AI, you name it, it just has great potential.

Those fortunate enough to have a PS3 may have already played the demo released earlier this week on the Playstation Store. I’ve played through it about 4 times now and am quite excited for the full version of the game. The only downside is I can’t seem to dismember any troopers with explosives, but this seems to be easily outdone by an amazing ragdoll and physics system.

Lots of weapons, explosions, enemies, blood and more, Killzone 2 should be one of the highlights of the PS3, and almost certainly of any other shooter on PC or other Xbox 360.

I’ve probably been reviewing too many things lately, I’ll see if I can get some more personal events up on the blog later.

Core i7

View Comments

Core i7. The new CPU architecture from Intel. It has now been out for about roughly 2 weeks, and it’s both cheaper and faster than the almighty QX9950 processors. Though Cheaper might not be the correct word.

There are 3 models. The 920 – 2.66ghz ($400ish) , 940  – 2.93ghz ($600ish) and 965 3.2Ghz (a mighty $2000-3000ish).

The cheapest of these, the 920 has beaten the QX9950 processors in most performances tests, which is great because it is faster and cheaper, and shows the Core i7 is a great and succesful starting architecture from Intel.

Some of the highlights are that it uses multi-threading, last seen back in Pentium 4 processors. The Core i7 chips are basically quad cores, but use two logical threads, so now you can brag how you have 8 logical cores!

Some of the performance gains seen such as Crysis’s 40% framerate increase, and a 30-second faster rendering time in most rendering benchmarks really show what the new i7 range has to offer.

i7 is to be described as the high-end range of the new architecture, with Core i5 chips coming out later early next year for mainstream usages, and obviously a lower price.

The downsides however, are the low overclocking abilities and the lower performance in certain games, as games rely heavily on the L2 cache of a CPU, where the older CPUs actually have performance gains over these chips. Hopefully we’ll see fixes to this soon, so I’d stay tuned for this big improvement. It has a lot of potential for 2009.
